Gleneagles Agreement Dates

Gleneagles Agreement Dates

There is no doubt that active governments and even members of Commonwealth governments are using the agreement to challenge athletes. It was only today that I learned that Trinidad`s representatives had been prevented from participating in the Disability Games by their government. The tragedy in New Zealand led Prime Minister Robert Muldoon to speak about the “experienced far-left organizers” who organize the protests. In the 1977 Gleneagles Agreement, Commonwealth Presidents and Prime Ministers, as part of their support for the international campaign against apartheid, agreed to end contact and competition between their athletes and sports organizations, teams or individuals in South Africa. The agreement was unanimously approved by the Commonwealth of Nations meeting in Gleneagles, Perthshire, Scotland. [1] [2] My friend Hon questioned the Gleneagles agreement. The date of the agreement is important. Commonwealth heads of state and government made their agreed statement in 1977, a year later, in which more than 20 countries, most of them Members of the Commonwealth, boycotted the Montreal Olympics. A similar threat was posed to the Commonwealth Games the following year in Edmonton. But the Commonwealth was only following a direction already given by the athletes themselves. Let us not forget that the agreement itself opposes apartheid at all times. I believe that all members of this House and many in South Africa are totally opposed to apartheid.

The agreement is intended only to discourage and discourage. It does not require any government to prevent its own international athletes from practising their arts wherever they wish. We are starting to wonder where we are going from here, because we now have the blacklist. The English cricket tour in India is in danger because Geoffrey Boycott, one of our leading players, is on the list. We wonder what will happen to the Commonwealth Finance Ministers` meeting and whether it will take place in the Bahamas. If that is the case, I hope that Britain will refuse to participate. We wonder what will happen to the Commonwealth conference and whether these two allies, Australia and New Zealand, will fight. We also question whether the agreement tarnishes relations between the United Kingdom and these two countries. The Gleneagles agreement is a bad name. This is not a formal agreement. This is only a joint political statement by the Commonwealth Heads of State and Government. Parliament`s authority was not sought at the time and has not been sought since because such power is not necessary.
